Every Automobile Owner Needs to Learn about Tires

When I bought my first car, I was very intimidated by it. However, my dad loved cars, so he had all of the regular maintenance done for me. Once I moved far from home when I landed my first job, I learned just how much may dad did to maintain my car. Little did I know that my tires had gone almost completely bald. I learned my lesson one day when it was raining and I slammed on the brakes -- my car slid and almost hit the one in front of me! This motivated me to take my car in for maintenance and the staff told me my tires were likely the problem. I have since dedicated myself to learning more about cars to keep me safe on the road. I want to share what I am learning on a blog to help others out there stay safe, too!

3 Tips For Extending The Lifespan Of Your Tires

Having a good set of tires is crucial to the safety and comfort of your vehicle. Buying new tires is always a big investment, so it's also important to take good care of them in order to help them last as long as possible and stay in good condition. Here are three tips for extending the lifespan of your tires:

Check Your Tire Pressure and Add Air as Needed

Your tires are designed to work most effectively when they are at the ideal level of pressure. If some of your tires are under-inflated, they may wear out more quickly and be more prone to flats. Checking your tire pressure with a pressure gauge (you can buy one at an auto parts store) and then filling with air at the gas station is an easy solution. Most cars have the recommended tire pressure for your make and model listed on the placard inside the vehicle door.

Have Your Tires Rotated Regularly

Rotating your tires helps ensure even wear, instead of allowing one part of your tire to wear out more quickly than it should. How often your tires need rotated can depend on how often you drive and the specific make and model of your car, but a good rule of thumb is to have them rotated every six months or so, or whenever you have your oil changed. Many auto shops will include a free or discounted tire rotation when they change your oil.

Be an Observant Driver

Cautious and responsible driving habits can go a long way toward protecting your tires. Being observant and cautious when you drive and park can help you avoid potholes, hitting the curb while parking, or driving over large objects in the road, all of which can cause damage to your tires. Driving too aggressively, braking hard, and accelerating too quickly are not only unsafe driving practices, but can also contribute to your tires wearing down more quickly than they should.

Avoid the Sun When Possible

Harsh UV rays from the sun can weaken and age your tires. If possible, park your car in a garage or covered carport on hot days. If this isn't an option, make a point to park in the shade whenever possible. Your car will stay comfortably cool and your tires will be protected at the same time.
